Est-Ce Si Mal?
Mallory Baker‘Est-Ce Si Mal?’ is a photographic series that explores the unconventional relationship between myself and my mother, exploring our perceptions of each other and the ways we interact. Both parties have been equipped with a point-and-shoot digital camera and have been tasked with capturing
the candid moments of the relationship, with no filters or changes in behaviour, just raw moments.
This series aims to explore our perceptions of each other, seeing one another from the other’s perspective, showing off our relationship that experiences more friendship and conflict than a more traditional dynamic that we would expect to see. Throughout the project, body language, reactions, and interactions explore what makes up the relationship between us, understanding the range of complicated feelings that make up mother-daughter relationships.
The name of the project, ‘Est-Ce Si Mal?’ takes inspiration from the French language, the second language of my mother, and is a phrase meaning ‘Is It So Bad?’. This phrase has two connections to my project; ‘Is It So Bad?’ was the response my mother gave when I said our relationship was different to other mother-daughter relationships, and the French word ‘Mal’ is the prefix of my name, adding a more personal connection.
This series invites the viewer to investigate the relationship, exploring what components make up the relationship, forming their own opinion and understanding of how we behave, react and function with one another, and asks the question: is it so bad?
