Roots of culture is a photography project which focuses on flowers and herbs in Polish culture. The body of work is divided into two parts, documentary and interpretative. The documentary side explores objects in which herbs and flowers were placed as symbols, decorations or ritual tools. I photographed traditional Polish garments, especially corsets richly embroidered with floral designs. Handcrafted tissue paper flowers (sometimes covered in beeswax), used as decorations to adorn religious images. An easter palm, which was placed behind sacred paintings after Palm Sunday - to protect the house and its members. Dried herbs used for healing and protective functions (in rituals).  A dresser with carved floral patterns. Pottery with floral motifs, which my grandma collected. These artefacts reveal how flowers and herbs shaped spirituality, aesthetics and identity in Polish folklore (in the region I am from).  In the second part I created scans of flowers. These images represent a return to the natural forms that inspired the folk motifs I documented. A contemporary digital herbarium of flowers and herbs which shows their raw, natural beauty. By placing next to each other two approaches - the cultural artefacts and the natural forms, the project reflects on how nature shapes culture and traditions. Also on roots, origins, how flowers and herbs from meadows became symbols, patterns or objects of rituals in Polish culture. The photographs of the garments, herbs, pająk, and the sacred painting were taken at the Museum of Przeworsk in Poland.
