Echoes of Equine
Charlie BownessMy project Echoes of the Equine explores intimate encounters with horses, shifting attention away from their dominant physical presence toward quieter, more nuanced moments. Through close observation and sustained proximity, I focus on subtle details that are often overlooked, allowing space for stillness and reflection. These images exist in the pause between movements, presenting the horse as a sentient companion with its own presence, personality, and history. This project is shaped equally by memory and intention. Growing up around horses taught me to observe the quiet forms of communication that build relationships – soft gestures, trustful glances, shared stillness. Through the lens, I strive to honour these moments and invite others to experience them. The act of photographing becomes a form of attractiveness rather than capture. The time spent with the horses is as important as the image itself. Gaining the trust, learning their personalities and kirks to shape the work. By working with the horses as a private enjoyment for myself, I also get to capture images that feel held rather than taken. Ultimately, Echoes of the Equine encourages empathy and attentiveness, challenging objectified perceptions of the horse. By focusing on intimate details rather than spectacle, the work asks viewers to reconsider how they look at, and relate to, non-human bodies.
